Chemical Transportation

National Chemical Carriers (NCC) was formed in 1990 as Limited Liability Company, 80% owned by Bahri and 20% by SABIC with a capital of SAR 200 million which was increased to SAR 500 million in 1992 and increased again to 610 million in 2006. NCC was set up to engage in the purchasing, chartering and operating of Chemical tankers for the transportation of Chemicals and other related products.

In June 2009, NCC signed a 50:50 joint venture with Odfjell SE of Norway to establish a joint operating company in Dubai, to commercially operate their combined fleet of coated chemical tankers. The joint venture, NCC Odfjell Chemical Tankers JLT, which started operation in January 2010, will re-enforce NCC position as a major player in the chemical transportation industry. On 9th April 2013, NCC agreed with Odfjell SE Tuesday to dissolve their 18 ships pool with a capacity of 40,000 DWT or higher owned by NCC and Odfjell SE in addition to acquiring the shares of Odfjell SE in the NCC Odfjell Chemical Tankers JLT (NOCT). Accordingly, NCC will acquire Odfjell’s 50% stake in NOCT from 1st June 2013 and will become a 100 percent owner of NOCT.

NCC is among the major chemical carriers in the world serving over 150 ports worldwide. It owns 23 vessels in operation with deadweight (DWT) of approximately 935,000 and transporting a vast array of chemical products that form the building materials for diverse industries. In addition, NCC has on order a further 1 vessel which will make the fleet size to 24 vessels and DWT to 1.102m by the year 2013.

In general terms, chemical cargoes can be divided into Organic, Inorganic, Vegetable oils, Animal fats, and other products. The International Bulk Chemicals (IBC) is developed by International Maritime Organization (IMO) and prescribes standards for ships involved in the carriage of chemicals. The IBC Code contains a list of almost 600 chemical products, detailing pollution category and hazard characteristics for each product, as well as specific requirements for ship design and equipment such as tank types, vapor detection and fire protection equipment.

NCC vessels are designed to the highest specification and capable of carrying a wide range of chemical cargoes with varying specifications thus enabling NCC to serve a large segment of the liquid chemical transportation markets.

NCC has proved to be an extremely profitable venture and has grown steadily over the years since its establishment in 1990.
