NCC Najem – Rescue of 35 People in the Malacca Strait
A life-threatening emergency in one of the world's busiest straits
On the night of 8 August 2022, NCC Najem encountered a distress situation in the Malacca Strait, one of the world’s busiest and most navigationally complex maritime corridors. Thirty‑five individuals were reported in open water under moderate to rough sea conditions, creating an immediate risk to life and requiring swift, decisive action from the vessel and its crew.
Leadership under pressure
Upon receiving the distress call, Captain Anatoliy Golev immediately initiated emergency rescue procedures. The vessel was swiftly maneuvered to the incident location, with the crew fully mobilized to execute the operation safely and efficiently. Despite challenging sea conditions, the rescue was carried out with precision, discipline, and full adherence to maritime safety protocols demonstrating the crew’s high level of preparedness and professionalism.
Rescue with precision and compassion
All 35 individuals were successfully recovered from the water and brought safely aboard NCC Najem. Following the rescue, the crew ensured the survivors received immediate care, including warm blankets, hot meals, and a secure environment until further arrangements could be made. The operation reflected Bahri’s deeply embedded safety culture and its commitment to protecting life at sea, even under high‑risk conditions.
Global recognition for exceptional bravery
The exemplary actions of Captain Golev and the NCC Najem crew received international recognition. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) nominated the crew for the 2023 IMO Honours for Exceptional Bravery at Sea. The IMO Council subsequently awarded a formal Letter of Commendation, with additional recognition presented at the Saudi Maritime Congress 2023. These honors underscore Bahri’s world‑class standards in maritime safety, emergency preparedness, and human‑centered seamanship.
